Challenge
A law firm's website is its most visited credential, and for Torys the challenge went well beyond launching a new site. The platform needed to serve hundreds of interconnected content types, integrate live with Foundation, Torys's firm management system, so hundreds of attorney bio pages stayed accurate without manual updates, and support sophisticated, name-aware, multilingual search at scale for in-house counsel and business leaders. Certain content types required full bilingual support, including search filters, date formatting, and bio page sections. On the infrastructure side, the firm's GitLab-based delivery pipeline needed modernization and migration to Azure DevOps to meet enterprise standards, and post-launch, Torys needed a long-term partner capable of managing upgrades, enhancements, and day-to-day operational stability.
Approach
Website Design and Build
TechGuilds led the end-to-end design and build of Torys's Sitecore SXA/JSS platform. A profile system synchronized live with Foundation automatically pulled and updated attorney bios, photos, practice areas, recognitions, and representative work, with full French-language support for bilingual bio pages. A Solr-powered search experience delivered multi-faceted filtering and name-aware, French-language typeahead across people, news, publications, and events. A fully custom MapBox integration, the Projects Map, let visitors explore the firm's representative transactions by geography, with list/map toggling, proximity clustering, and deep-linking — a capability rare among Canadian law firm websites. The team also built a full SXA/JSS component library and executed a large-scale content migration from Torys's legacy platform.
CI/CD Modernization and Azure DevOps Migration
TechGuilds migrated Torys's full CI/CD pipeline from GitLab to Azure DevOps, provisioning the new environment, migrating the source repository with history intact, and modernizing .NET solution projects to SDK-style format. Automated build and release pipelines were configured across development, QA/UAT, and production, with blue-green deployments to eliminate downtime and rollback capabilities for fast recovery. The legacy GitLab environment was decommissioned once the cutover was fully validated.
Sitecore Platform Upgrade and Infrastructure Improvements
TechGuilds upgraded the Torys Sitecore environment to version 10.4.1 while delivering infrastructure improvements in parallel without pausing feature work. Lawyer name search was enhanced to support multi-word and partial queries, with updated Solr tokenization deployed across QA/UAT and production. The team resolved Azure App Service under-sizing that was causing platform slowness, upgraded Azure Functions from Node.js 16 to 20 LTS, and extended monitoring across the production environment and the Foundation Integration Job. TechGuilds also produced a strategic point-of-view evaluating Sitecore 10.4 against a move to Sitecore XM Cloud, giving Torys's leadership an evidence-based basis for their next platform decision.
Managed Services and Ongoing Support
TechGuilds provides Torys with continuous managed services and dedicated day-to-day support across two parallel engagements: a managed services team handling project management, solution architecture, QA, and regular production deployments, and a support team handling SSL renewals, Foundation data sync issues, content and taxonomy updates, PDF generation incidents, SEO investigations, and monthly stakeholder reporting.
